Moire Play - Kinetic Kit

I can admit that this one is not exciting in a kinetic way but hey, it still has moving parts. The fun here is in the optical effect:

My goal was to make a very simple platform for exploring these interference patterns with paper screens, known as Moiré Patterns. I feel this is still within the design constrains I have given myself (use paper and wood, make something that moves, assemble it without glue).

I made 3 sets of screens for the kit but there are many more variations worth exploring (perhaps a subject for another post). In the video I also show some possible combinations and even stacking 3 at the time.

The legs are slanted so it can be placed upright. This made me think it would be fun to design a whole lamp in this fashion, let me know if you like this idea.

The simple horizontal slits are pretty cool but my favorite effect so far is achieved with the hexagonal grid as it spawns several patterns and effects:

You can grab the files or poke at the project here. The assembly video is also posted on youtube for easy sharing, and I posted a few pre-cut kits on my shop

Other Projects and Updates:

The Mind Shrines Zine is now available! This project is very dear to my heart, I drew it in collaboration with Theo Ellsworth over several years.

I love Theo's work, and I swear reading his comic book Capacity and the Understanding Monster Series rewired my brain in some fashion. So being able to collaborate with him was a delight to me. And perhaps a needed escape from reality during the pandemic years.

Our process involved taking turns, having the paper zine for months at a time and mailing it back and forth between Los Angeles and Missoula. We would add drawings or respond to each other's artwork. At some point it felt complete and we decided to print it.

The narrative is very loose and dreamy, but it roughly follows a character that is on a pilgrimage visiting different imaginary shrines, or "Mind Shrines".

Here is a video flip through and here is a previous post where I was trying to document the progress of the zine in fading images. Hope you like it!

And thanks as always for your continued support!
