Making Waves - Kinetic Kit

The process of designing the Pop-Up zines over the past few months was very enjoyable, but when it came to selling them I realized they were very labor intensive . Which means I can only make so many, and I had to price them higher than I expected.

The project I came up with this month is my reaction to that. I wanted to make something that was a little easier to produce and that didn't require me to assemble it.

Making a flat-pack kit like this one solves some of these problems, plus I get to share the joy of assembling them.

I also wanted to continue working with paper and with some of the pop-up ideas, so I thought I'd pick up again the paper+wood aesthetic I had with all these kinetic pieces I made some time ago (this is a 1 minute video with all of them), here are a couple of my favorites:

You can read all about them on my website

These were all handmade and I was asked many times if I would sell them, but they were one-offs and I felt they were too fragile. I still wanted to share them so I designed a laser-cuttable version of the walking man that recently got an upgrade

Anyway, this first Patreon kit doesn't have a recognizable character like the others, but I wanted to do something that was a simple exploration of movement with wood and paper.

I spent some time figuring out how to make the snapping connectors and how to laser cut the kit in one piece with the tiny holding tabs, and I'll show more of that process in future posts.

My plan is to make a few more of these kits in the coming months and see how they evolve as I learn strategies for making different components. My intention is to make the files available to Patrons and sell the physical kits on my shop

You can grab the files for Making Waves here (the project will let you specify the thickness of your material, do send me a message if you need help or run into any issues)

Thanks for supporting this exploration, and thank you for following along!
