93/100 - Behind the mirror

It's a bit of a stretch, but I was thinking this character would be holding a mirror and we would a get a view from behind the mirror itself, a view of a distant landscape. But he could also be wearing a mask that covers the main part of his face. A mask that doubles as a mirror.

This is one of those partially baked concepts I keep on circling around, the relationship between mirrors and identity. I don't have any wisdom to impart here other than how strange I find it that mirrors are the main way we know what we look like, but they offer only one perspective. Video is a bit different and I'm usually shocked to see myself on video, "I didn't know I looked like that" is what most often goes through my mind.

Proof of this obsession is a doodle from several years ago:

And the answer is double because yes, that is you in the mirror, and no, that is just an image of you, and illusion, a lie. Which is why I love that the magic mirror in Snow White is supposed to never lie.

I'm going to leave you with two mirror related facts: one, our beloved magpie is the first non-mammal to have been found to be able to recognize itself in the mirror, which is, you know, another great reason to love magpies; and two, Snow White's magic mirror may have been based on an actual talking mirror that can still be seen at the Spessart Museum in the Lohr Castle in Germany.

Behind the mirror is 3.5" by 4". Available here(sold).
