67/100 - In the head of a giant

This is something I have never asked my mother: what do you think about giant robots? And I put it like that because I haven't been confronted with the need explain what is so cool about giant robots in popular culture to anyone from that generation. In a way it's hard to define because they have always been there for me, some of the earliest animated tv shows I remember watching were Japanese anime dubbed in Spanish, Mazinger Z chief among them. Then the 80's were  flooded with transformer toys and in college I feel in hard among the nerds of the anime club where I was introduced to Macross and the wonderful Neon Genesis Evangelion.

So this stuff has been around for a while and our culture has digested the idea of giant robots for a few decades. Star wars has giant robot walkers, Aliens has big mechanical loader suits, Guillermo Del Toro made Pacific Rim. So asking what's so cool about giant robots is like asking what is cool about time travel or space exploration, or artificial intelligence. Which is my way of saying I'm not really sure myself.

There is something we like about human shaped things so we seem prefer the idea of humanoid robots, even though most functional robots we know of today are not human shaped. And the idea of giants is very old in human myth so this could be an updated version of it. I also like that image of a tiny human piloting a very big humanoid machine, it's a representation of what it feels like to have a mind that -allegedly- has will and command of a body.

Today I only drew the head emerging from the waters, and the giant is not entirely a robot given that is has very organic eyes, but you get the idea. Also the wikipedia entry on mecha is a fun read, and  let me know what your parents think about giant robots.

The head of this giant is 3" by 3". Available here(sold).
