40/100 - Tower guardian

That triumphant post I wrote yesterday about being able to do everything at once, well, scratch that. I spent a good number of frustrating hours today trying to finish that mechanical piece and drawing something on it was the difficult part. Part of the problem was my lack of planning. As the deadline loomed closer and closer I decided that starting something was better than doing nothing so I ran with an idea contained in a simple sketch. And I used the additive method, that is, I didn't figure out the whole plan first, I just started building and solved problems as they came. Which is probably the way most things happen the first time, but I now wish I had had a more solid plan for the visual elements. I wouldn't call it a failure right now, but a decent try.

For a while now I've been trying to merge my visual output with moving elements - a mix of my drawing self with my maker self. Those small pieces from a few years ago felt like a successful attempt. But even before those I had made this piece I really liked:

But I haven't yet accomplished a successful symmetric drawing with motion elements which is what I was going for. Today's piece is an example of one of those drawings. Somehow they come really easily to me, they are in fact quite fun and sometimes I draw them just to relax. They are a little mysterious to me since I don't know exactly what they are, sometimes I make them into towers almost to disguise them. And I even feel a tiny bit of shame for drawing so many and not challenging myself to draw something different.

But I'm going to absolve myself of shame today, I did some honest work and all the problems I just mentioned are wonderful problems to have. I'm off to bed now, hopefully I'll sleep as peacefully as the tower guardian.

Tower guardian is 2.5" by 3.5". Available here(sold).
