3/100 - Surprise

Something that still surprises me as an artist is that there doesn't seem to be a linear relationship between effort and results. That is, putting a lot of effort into something doesn't guarantee that people will like it. And sometimes, simple, spontaneous or spur-of-the-moment gestures will connect with people in unexpected ways. I guess put on very obscure terms it seems like both life and art making are on a variable schedule of reinforcement.
I don't know if I have learned the right lessons because I still put a lot of effort into many things. At best what I try to do is censor myself a bit less. Today's drawing is an example of something that makes me uncomfortable (it feels a little wonky) but I decided to post it anyway. I've also learned that I'm not really the best judge of my own output.
This is of course a consequence of posting things on a daily basis that I enjoy, just having to move on. I don't think of myself as a perfectionist anyway and when I look at the art I enjoy it seems to be full of spontaneity, accident and looseness. Oh yeah, the struggle to be loose, That's a subject for another day.
