Some can be considered <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Automaton\">automata<\/a> and some fall somewhere in between illustrations and kinetic sculptures. There are links to longer posts about particular pieces or videos when appropriate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Kuroi Gojira (Black Godzilla)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I made this one for a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaiju\">Kaiju<\/a> themed show at Giant Robot Store. The whole thing is carved out of a block of basswood and the mechanical parts are made with brass tubing and rods. I wanted to keep it simple and it&#8217;s somewhat inspired with the nodding pieces made by Paul Spooner. I made a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ya45K29C3t0\">short 1.5 minute process video<\/a> of its making.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wolfcatworkshop.com\/otherfiles\/gojira.gif?w=880&#038;ssl=1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Navigating the alien seas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This one was made for a group show at Giant Robot Store titled &#8220;Land and Sea&#8221;. I was particularly happy with how smooth the mechanism runs on this one thanks to the 4-bar linkage cam follower I used (see the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7m0X13ZaQIA\">youTube<\/a> video for a longer explanation). I also tried to use as little glue as possible this time, relying more on screws for assembly and reparability. Mothra has a really interesting background story and it&#8217;s perhaps\u2063 the most benevolent of all <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaiju\">Kaiju<\/a>. She has also been called the &#8220;Queen of Monsters&#8221;. I made <a href=\"https:\/\/wolfcatworkshop.com\/index.php\/portfolio\/automata-kit-for-neko-show\/\">this page<\/a> dedicated to the assembly instructions and documentation, you can also watch this <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nX9c1cnrI2U\">short assembly video<\/a>. I also made a companion wall mounted version that was activated by a motion sensor and powered by a small gear motor. I wanted to design a version that would be quick to make using a laser cutter. It was made for Giant Robot&#8217;s 4 annual Totoro show and there is a longer post with building documentation <a href=\"https:\/\/wolfcatworkshop.com\/index.php\/interactive-totoro-piece-for-giant-robot-show\/\">here<\/a>, I also got to talk with Donald Bell about it on a short video interview you can <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CxFEjp_eBXA\">see here<\/a>. But in short: I made one a day during a whole month and that helped me  discover the expressive qualities of paper when incorporated into moving contraptions. Sometimes the simple things are the best things. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wolfcatworkshop.com\/otherfiles\/flipbook-drill-closeup.gif?resize=592%2C592&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"592\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3>Simple foam core models<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the prettiest thing but it&#8217;s one of a <a href=\"https:\/\/wolfcatworkshop.com\/index.php\/making-basic-mechanical-models-with-simple-materials\/\">series of foam core models<\/a> I made to try out some mechanisms.
